the new animal

„Wo sind die Helden, die Kolonisatoren, die Opfer der Metropole?“

Where are the heroes, the colonializers, the victims of the metropolis asked bidi brecht in his diary in 1921. in the first years of the 21st century the general fear of the unfriendly take-over by mega-metropolis has happened turning the world into a „planet of slums“ (mike davis). for the first time in human history more people live in cities than in the countryside (an uncanny correspondence: for the first time more people live than have lived before – which means that there are more people alive today than have ever lived before).  but those leading – says the Fatzer-commentary – are overcoming this fear and realize the big cities. so every morning when an inhabitant of a big city has doubts about the cities‘ take-over, he or she should go to the padegogium and speak the words about the growth of the big cities and try out the attitude in which the leading come to the conclusion to realize the big cities and thus overcome his or her fear. Or realize how this fear is a mask of another hope. so the inhabitants learn to live in their cities more like clandestinos than citizens as the future refugees that they are: home- and landless like the rest of the world. this is the attitude expressed in bidi’s handbook for city-dwellers – it is not only brecht’s ‚minimanual for the urban guerilla‘, but as walter benjamin pointed out, also an instruction guide for the soon-to-be-exiled, since an underground activist already lives in his or her country like an exile. the antifascist emigrants were an avantgarde of what was soon to come: the transformation of citizens into denizens on a global scale as hannah arendt wrote in her essay We refugees (used by giorgio agamben to describe the homo sacer). the lesson is not easy, but needed in a city like Sao Pauli to get prepared for the ‚war without battle‘ that is raging not only in the city, but between the cities and between the city and the country. instead of going in the cities to hide and wait for the revolution like Fatzer and his posse, it is time to desert from their desertion, to leave the urban environment, sit down in the periphery and / wait for them. because now has to / come a good time; because soon / will step forward the new animal that / is born to release the human:

„Wir aber wollen uns

Setzen an den Rand der Städte und

Auf sie warten. Denn jetzt muss

Kommen eine gute Zeit; denn jetzt bald

Tritt hervor das neue Tier, das

Geboren wird, den Menschen auszulösen.“

the new animal: HUMANIMAL: queer creatures – like those dorothy was confronted by with the wizard of oz (the wooden people called gargoyles) or like those alice encountered in wonderland? whatever they will be called, they will not be named by us, but we will be named by them as the animal that doesn’t have a language, but needs to receive a word from outside.
